A Length of Katazome Cotton: Rain Dragons
early twentieth century
32 1/4" x 13 1/4", 82 cm x 33.6 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton cloth that shows an unusual pattern.
It shows the tatewaku--or parallel undulating lines pattern--made of streams of stylized rain dragons. Inside of each of the bows between the undulating vertical lines we see clouds.
The designs in the pattern are attenuated in a way that seems to reference Indonesian batik or Indian trade cloth for foreign markets. The colors are a pale blue, a deep blue ground and a greyish tone for the clouds.
The vertical orientation of the elements of the design is unusual as is the color combination.
A curious pattern and a rare one.
