A Length of Kasuri Cotton: Pieced of Four Fragments
early twentieth century
65 1/21" x 12 3/4", 166.5 cm x 32.5 cm
ThisĀ is a length of hand woven cotton kasuri cloth that is composed of four pieces that are hand stitched together.
The length is a bit frayed on its two short ends and the suppleness of the cloth indicates it was well used. More than likely this length is recycled from a kimono, the recycling was a method to transform an old kimono into a usable futon cover which was a common practice in traditional Japan.
The predominant color is deep in tone, it reads as black, with warmish toned warp yarns and white geometric designs that have a whiff of an Art Deco feel.
This is a lovely length of kasuri cotton with an unusual, geometric pattern.
Just lovely.
