A Length of Indigo Dyed Cotton Egasuri: Unusual Pattern
early to mid twentieth century
56 1/2" x 12 3/4", 143.5 cm x 32.35 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton kasuri whose yarns have been selectively dyed to create an image when woven.
The woven image is a very unusual one: it shows three ceramic pots sitting in a cluster. The image is framed by intersecting, yellow-dyed cotton lines--there are three full images and two partial ones.
Imaged kasuri or egasuri ("picture kasuri") is part of the kasuri weaving tradition but, again, this image is so rare as to make one wonder why it was woven.
The length is in good, used condition with one small hole to one of the three full images, this flaw shown in an accompanying detail photo here.
