A Length of Indigo Dyed Boro Cotton: Geometric Katazome Pattern
ca. early twentieth century
84" x 12 1/2", 213.5 cm x 31.5 cm
This is a wonderful and very long piece of old, indigo dyed katazome cotton boro.
The base cloth shows an interesting pattern of staggered cross shapes in between three, narrow vertical lines; the cloth itself shows patina, wear and light fading, each of these elements adding to the aged beauty of the piece.
There are several hand sewn patches to this length, the entirety of which is sewn from several pieces joined together. About 2/3 of the entire length is comprised of two layers of the same base cloth, so this boro textile has a nice weight and texture from this layering.
A very handsome piece of old Japanese cloth, with good color, resist dyeing and patching.
