A Length of Grey Toned Katazome Cotton: Classic Pattern
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
47" x 13 1/4", 119.5 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length of old katazome dyed cotton that is attractive for its warm, pale grey color and its large repeat.
It is a "classic" katazome pattern as it shows stylized chrysanthemums and arabesques, both large scale. This combination of motifs is seen in katazome cloth in endless variation.
As said before the grey tone is lovely to look at and what is even nicer is that this is a color tone-on-white design which is a bit less common that the white-on-dark patterns.
There is some very faint, almost unnoticeable staining to the undyed parts of the cloth and one of the detail photos that accompany this post show illustrate this.
Charming.
