A Length of Delicately Patterned Katazome: Bellflower and Arabesque
$45.00 USD
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
23" x 13", 58.5 cm x 33 cm
This short length of indigo dyed katazome cotton shows an all-over pattern of a fairly large scale. The image portrayed here in a kind of filigree manner is that of the Chinese bellfower against a background of arabesque or trailing vine.
The white-on-blue treatment of the katazome is effective here; the cloth is slightly faded overall and shows some surface wear from age and use. Not surprising.
The cloth seems hand woven and the yarns seem hand spun which add to the appeal of this well-designed and well-executed indigo dyed katazome cotton.
