A Length of Boro Cloth: Three Old Striped Cottons

$75.00 USD

late nineteenth, early twentieth century
70" x 12 1/2", 178 cm x 31.75 cm

This length of indigo dyed cotton is muted in color and pattern and it is hand stitched from three segments of cloth of two different patterns.  It is patched and layered with contrasting patches which make this length appear to be made of three different stripes.

This boro panel was taken from a futon cover which was most likely fashioned from recycled kimonos: the cotton is of type that was worn in the late 19th century.

In faded, abraded condition, this old hand woven cotton cloth shows some flaws in the small holes which prick the surface, but overall these small imperfections do not detract from the ability to appreciate the overall handsome quality of this panel.

Lovely.
