A Length of Boldly Patterned Katazome: 19th Century
30 1/2" x 13 1/2", 77.5 cm x 34 cm
This is a beautiful length of complex-patterned and well-executed katazome cotton; the quality of this piece is enhanced by its hand spun cotton yarns.
The design shows intricately detailed dragons worked as roundels which are set against a background of a pattern called bishamon kikko, a familiar one that is based on a field of interlocking three-pointed shapes.
Grey and black dyes help bring visual depth to the blue and white which is characteristic of katazome.
The cloth is faded from wear and shows some surface abrasion which is in keeping with the age of the piece and does not distract the eye from the overall beauty of the panel.
Wonderful. Old.
