A Length of Beautiful, Old Cotton: Plaid and Sankuzushi

$65.00 USD

late nineteenth century
29" x 13", 73.5 cm x 33 cm

What a wonderful length of old plaid cotton cloth: the yarns are hand spun and the length is hand woven.

The plaid is a complex one and what is wonderful about it is that the intersections of the blue warp and weft yarns meet to form a kind of basket weave design which is referred to as sankuzushi.

Because sankuzushi was so popular in the 19th century we know this is an old fragment more likely than not dating to that time period.

The overall effect of this length of cotton strongly evokes folk craft in 19th century Japan and its design and color is simply beautiful.

Recommended for its age and stunningly rustic appearance.
