A Length of Arashi Shibori: Two Directions
early twentieth century
27 1/2" x 13", 69.5 cm x 33 cm
This is a very good piece of indigo dyed cotton shibori: the technique used to produce this complex pattern is a from of arashi shibori, arashi meaning storm, so the allusion of the pattern imprinted into this cloth is that of driving rain.
Many variations of arashi are based on strong diagonals.
The cotton seems not to be hand loomed, however the indigo is likely botanical, if not wholly, then in part.
Nicely patterned, with some charming "irregularities" to the arashi shibori this is a very good piece of hand made Arimatsu shibori cotton in good, used condition.
Please note that there are zones of light fading, an ingrained crease or two and some small picks or tiny holes to the piece, an attempt to show them has been made on the accompanying detail photos.
Beautiful.
