A Length of Arashi Shibori: Cross Hatching
early to mid twentieth century
60" x 13", 152.5 cm x 33 cm
What a beautiful length of indigo dyed shibori cotton.
This length is taken from a yukata, or an unlined, casual, summer kimono, and as such, it bears some ingrained creases from a lifetime of use.
The irregular, jagged long, thin narrow lines going in two directions are the result of a shibori technique called arashi or storm shibori, as often arashi shibori is done on a diagonal and calls to mind hard-driving rain.
The lines are lovely in their unevenness--and one can see areas of light fading to the length.
The color of the base of the cloth is of a dull, very light blue tone, it is not bright white.
Just lovely.
