A Large Patched Bag: Hand Stitched Indigo Dyed Cotton
early twentieth century
30" x 19", 76 cm x 48 cm
Shown here is a fairly large-sized indigo dyed patched cotton bag.
Essentially it is a long piece of hand spun, hand woven indigo dyed cotton which is constructed of two, vertically-oriented pieces that has been folded over on to itself and stitched up the sides to make a bag.
The color of the cotton is a much truer blue than shown here; it is a pure indigo color.
This lovely old utilitarian textile is beautiful as-is but it certainly can be easily transformed into a pillow. Similarly, the sides can be unstitched and it can become a long, boro textile or something very nice for a table.
In any case this is a handsome patched indigo dyed cotton cloth that shows good patching, good character of cloth and very nice color and patching.
A charming thing.
