A Large, Four Panel Boro Katazome Futon Cover: Beautifully Repaired
early to mid twentieth century
56" x 47", 142 cm x 119.5 cm
This is a large, boro, indigo dyed cotton katazome futon cover, four panels in all, each of which is hand stitched to the other.
The base cloth shows a katazome design that is typical for use on bedding in old Japan: the design is a repeat pattern of highly stylized chrysanthemums. But what adds interest to the boro cloth is, of course, the patching.
This futon cover shows about a dozen hand stitched patches, the configuration of them in a nice, big artful cluster on the top right quadrant of this piece makes the group visually interesting. Note especially the floral printed, commercially milled cotton patch which adds a nice moment of contrast to the group of patches as well as to the katazome ground.
This is an extremely handsome full futon cover in good, used condition.
