A Large, Five Panel Boro Futon Cover: Patches and Plaid
early to mid twentieth century
62" x 62". 157.5 cm x 157.5 cm
This a large, cotton futon cover that is made of five panels, each of which was woven in the traditional Japanese loom width of about 13" or 33 cm.
The plaid cloth is slightly faded but seems to have been colored using natural dyes.
The beautiful aspect of this mended futon cover is the amount of patches, there are about 50 or more of them hand stitched to the surface.
There is a wonderful artfulness about the placement and the number of these patches and it is this, in combination with the base cloth of plaid, that makes this piece visually arresting.
Please note there is some loss to the base cloth along the edges of this futon cover, some of the loss shown on the detail photos that accompany this post.
Beautiful.
