A Katazome Dyed Han Juban: Re-Purposed Cotton

This is a beautifully patterned, katazome dyed and hand stitched, old indigo dyed cotton han juban, a half under-kimono.

The hand woven cotton appears to be woven from hand spun cotton yarns. The indigo dye is slightly in tone and it shows zones of darker indigo, especially on the back of the garment, and this indicates that the han juban has been made from repurposed cloth.

The pattern is interesting: it is a repeat design of stylized cranes that are shaped as a diamond. In between these motifs are pine needles, also stylized. An interesting note is that each of these symbols--the crane and the pine--represent a wish for both long life and marital fidelity. The crane mates for life and pine needles fall in pairs.

In good, used condition, this is a charming and authentic garment from old Japan and one whose cloth contains beautifully meaningful symbolism.
