A Handsome Length of Striped and Patched Cotton: Beautiful Indigo
early twentieth century
70" x 13 1/4", 178 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a richly colored, indigo dyed length of cotton which shows an almost Minimalist-type stripe: the length at 70" or 178 cm is fairly long for such a piece.
The condition is good and the colors are clear. What can be easily seen in the accompanying photos is that there is subtlety to the rich indigo colors which pairs nicely with the three or so mending patches that repair this length.
Fabrics such as this one, with their wide-stripes, were used for bedding in old Japan, this one would have been used as a futon cover, which is basically what we call a duvet.
A lovely cloth from old Japan, this is a clean and fresh design, some 80 years after it was first made.
