A Hand Spun Cotton Resist Dyed Indigo Bag: Nice Motifs
late nineteenth century
16" x 15 1/4", 40.5 cm x 38.5 cm
This beautiful, hand stitched pouch or bag is made from one piece of hand spun, hand woven cotton that has been folded over and hand stitched up its two sides.
The quality of the old cotton is superb as is the pale blue indigo color: the cotton is rich in ito aji or thread flavor as the Japanese call it, and the pale blue color is desirable.
Each side of the bag shows a resist dyed family crest or kamon: the large kamon sitting at the bottom of the bag is holly and that which is on the on the other side is oak.
The cotton shows some small holes or snags, some of which are pictured on the accompanying detail photos.
A lovely thing with good age and wonderful cotton.
