A Gauzy Cotton Section of Mosquito Netting: Leftover Yarn Weft
early twentieth century
33 1/2" x 24 1/2", 85 cm x 62 cm
This gauzy two panel section of cloth was taken from a cotton mosquito net and was woven from leftover yarns which is why we see a random color blocking on this piece.
Zanshi ori is cloth that is woven from threads either leftover from home production of yarn making, or from broken threads that were purchased from local commercial weavers. Usually the weft is fed with these random threads while generally the warp is regulated producing an irregular horizontal 'striping.'
This small fragment does not have much structure so it is truly gauzy in weight, hand feel and pliability.
It is a small beauty and would look wonderful when displayed to be admired.
