A Fragment of Katazome Cotton: Stylized Pine Bark Pattern
$45.00 USD
early twentieth century
20 1/4" x 12 3/4", 51 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed katazome cotton that shows a pattern of zigzagged lozenge shapes colored in indigo dye.
This traditional Japanese pattern is called matsukawabishi or the pine bark pattern.
The length is more a fragment in size and the dye on the pattern is slightly irregular in coverage due to either the method of dyeing or the wear this fragment encountered later in life.
It is more than likely a piece taken from a han juban or half under kimono which, often, were made of katazome dyed cotton in bold patterns.
