A Double Panel of Cotton Zanshi ori: Wonderful Old Indigo Yarns
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
61 1/2" x 27", 155 cm x 68.5 cm
This is a patched, two panel piece of indigo dyed cotton zanshi ori cloth.
Zanshi ori is cloth that is woven from threads either leftover from home production of yarn making, or from broken threads that were purchased from local commercial weavers. Usually the weft is fed with these random threads while generally the warp is regulated producing an irregular horizontal 'striping'; if home threads are used, knotted slubs can often be seen.
In this case two panels of cloth have been hand stitched together; four mending patches can be seen on this textile.
Please note that this piece shows some damage. There are some holes--one small one fairly prominent--a tear to the selvedge and some threadbare areas as well as overall fading.
Because of these condition issues this otherwise very good zanshi ori cloth is being offered at a fair price relevant to its condition.
Still this is a very interesting piece of zanshi ori cloth with good age and all the intrinsic qualities which make it an appealing zanshi ori textile.
