A Coarse Length of Handwoven Cotton: Stripes, Abrasion and Patch
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
74" x 14 1/4", 188 cm x 36 cm
This slightly bowed length of hand woven cotton has been worn hard. It shows fading, patina and some abrasion from wear. It seems to have been taken from a futon cover.
The cotton is thickly or coarsely woven and is heavy in the hand: the base color, an indigo dye, is a kind of dark grey/black/blue. The contrasting stripes are pale blue-white and a cool pale orange color.
As can be seen in the detail photos that accompany this post, there are some pulls and loss to the surface of this rustic, hand woven cotton cloth.
Not a refined length of hand woven cotton, this old piece of patched, hand loomed cotton has character.
