A Child's Silk Kimono: Large Scale Shippo Tsunagi
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 32 3/4" x 32 1/4", 83 cm x 82 cm
This charming and eye catching child's kimono is hand stitched of silk kasuri cloth that shows an oversized, traditional pattern of interlocking circles referred to in Japan as shippo tsunagi.
The color combination of purple and grey/green is alluring, maybe more so because of the rich orange details provided by the lining and the tie. Please note a few small holes to the lining, one of which is shown on the detail photos here.
The small kimono is lightly padded and is still in wearable condition: the pattern as it is out of scale with the size of the small garment is very fun to look at.
Delightful.
