A Checkerboard Woven Obi: Rustic Dark Tones
mid twentieth century
120" x 8 1/4", 305 cm x 21 cm
Shown here is a nicely textured, rustically woven obi, a traditional kimono sash that appears to be a sakiori or rag woven obi but is not. It is woven from sturdy, thick yarns.
The visual effect of this rustic obi is of a regulated, well-patterned, checkerboard in a good scale to the size and width of the obi. The colors are a kind of copperish tone and a kind of purplish tone.
The weight of the obi is fairly light and sturdy and the colors are rich, close in tone and sophisticated.
This is a beautifully patterned obi in good, well-used condition appropriate with its age.
Beautiful.
