A Checkerboard Sakiori Obi: Green Passage
mid twentieth century
128" x 5 1/4", 325 cm x 13.25 cm
Shown here is a sakiori obi, which is a traditional kimono sash that has been woven from a weft of shredded, recycled cottons.
The effect of this sakiori obi is of a regulated, well-patterned, red and white checkerboard. The weft yarns are rag and are red and mottled white which causes the dark blips that are seen along the weft area. You will also note there is a small band of green at one of the short ends of the obi: green rag weft was fed into that area. It is an interesting, surprising detail.
A beautifully pattened sakiori obi in good, well-used condition appropriate with its age.
Beautiful.
