A Beautifully Composed and Constructed Boro Futon Cover: Reversible
early twentieth century
40" x 47", 101.5 cm x 119.5 cm
This is a good-sized section of a boro futon cover that is beautifully composed and arranged from blocky pieces of cotton, both hand woven and commercially produced.
Each of the two sides of this boro textile is equally interesting: the side shown in the lead photo is more complex with patches than the other side which is quieter or less exuberant.
Since this was taken from a futon cover that had been used, presumably, for a few decades the cloth pieces have been accrued over time and some show wear in the form of surface abrasion and small holes as can be seen in the detail photos that accompany this post.
It is, however, the overall impression of artfulness and unintended visually appealing design that is the lure of this piece which has a great deal to offer the eye.
It was said to have been found or made in Niigata prefecture which is in Japan's rural northeastern Tohoku region.
This is a wonderful first acquisition for the beginning collector and it is equally interesting to add to a collection you already have begun.
