A Beautifully Colored Zanshi ori Cotton Kaya Fragment: Netting
mid twentieth century
44" x 13", 111.75 cm x 33 cm
This is the most unusual and beautifully little thing and it is so much more delicate and wonderfully colored in person than is shown here in photographs.
It is a length of cotton kaya or mosquito netting that is woven from left over yarns: quite beautiful, and not often seen.
The warp yarns are indigo and the weft yarns are striated in random segments, from pale blue to warm ochre to dark blue to white, the staggered progression of color blocks being just beautifully, and accidentally, composed.
The two short edges are torn and jagged, but the body of the textile is beautifully colored and somewhat rare. There are examples of zansh ori kaya, but they are scant.
Wonderful and recommended.
