A Beautifully Boro Mitten: Northern Japan

$90.00 USD

early to mid twentieth century
9 3/4" x 7", 24.75 cm x 18 cm

This chunky, hand made, padded, heavy mitten is made from boldly stitched, recycled cottons with a wrist banding .

The padding is fairly heavy and seems to be the result of the layering of cotton cloth. The construction of the glove seems to be mostly hand stitched. There are some machine stitched details to the mitten done in white cotton thread and easily seen on the photos here.

A charming, utilitarian textile and one that tells much of country life in a Japan that still used traditional methods of garment construction based in re-purposing cloth.

Recommended.
