late nineteenth, early twentieth century
48" x 6 1/2", 122 cm x 16.5 cm
This is a simple textile but it is beautiful for its intrinsically interesting details, namely the hand spun, hand woven cotton that has beautifully faded to reveal its structure.
The length offered here is folded lengthwise and stitched closed. One end shows an addition of a small square of cotton that is sashiko stitched with a loose X on it. It most likely came from the collar section of a kimono or, more likely, a sleeping kimono.
Laid flat it is a good looking, old textile with a lot of thread integrity and good character.
