A Beautiful Old Boro Futon Cover: Two Distinct and Viewable Sides
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
60" x 36", 152.5 cm x 91.5 cm
This is a marvelous, old indigo dyed cotton boro futon cover that is as interesting on one side as it is its other.
Its blue indigo tones were hard to demonstrate through photography so please know that the color of this futon cover is bluer and more saturated than what is shown here.
The cotton cloth which comprises the futon cover is hand spun and hand woven.
The arrangement of patches and the quality of mending on each of the two sides of this futon cover are just what you want to see in an old boro futon cover.
This one should be considered if you are thinking to start a collection or if you have one that you would like to enrich.
The lead photos show what would have been the proper "inside" of the futon cover while the photos starting with the sixth one show the proper "outside."
Each side shows great, unintended artistry in its patching and mending. The inside is much freer with its patching as is custom on boro futon covers while the outside--the "public facing" side--is much more subtle as it is an attempt to downplay the mending of its surface.
In the case of this boro futon cover it is unclear which of the two sides is more aesthetically appealing as each side has its visually enticing merits.
As mentioned above this is an opportunity to acquire a good quality boro futon cover that is remarkably attractive in what is being asked for it.
Very recommended.
