A Beautiful Length of Spare Kasuri: Warp and Weft
ca. late nineteenth, early twentieth century
52" x 14 1/4", 132 cm x 36 cm
On this website we have mentioned ito aji, thread taste or flavor, as being an important element in old Japanese folk textiles.
This densely woven cotton length is rich in ito aji as its yarns are hand spun and the cloth is beautifully hand woven. Likewise, the rich, inky, indigo is dark in color and conveys a velvety texture to the eye. Punctuating this dark length of cloth are eight, bright white warp and weft kasuri images, a variant on the well cover.
This is a simple, elegant and country length of cloth, just the kind that speaks to those who really love Japanese folk textiles.
