A Beautiful Length of Kurume Kasuri: Large Scale Well Cover Motif

$80.00 USD

ca. early twentieth century
72" x 13 1/4", 183 cm x 33.5 cm

What a beauty.  This is a length of very good-looking, indigo dyed kasuri cloth from Kurume, a famous kasuri producing city in Kyushu.  The cotton yarns used in the hand weaving of this length are full of character, as is the warm, rich indigo tones of the dye.

The pattern is a bold, checked pattern which shows alternating resisted "well cover" motifs along its length.  The color, as described above, is a warm, gorgeous indigo, presumably derived from natural sources.

There is just a touch of light fading to this piece to give its color a shade of softness, and the cotton itself is nice and sturdy.  Two tiny holes--more like snags to the cloth--are barely noticeable.

A wonderful, old textile.
