A Tsutsugaki Dyed Cloth: Crane as Roundel or Crest

This is a tsutsugaki dyed cotton cloth that was dyed in indigo and shows the image of a crane rendered as a roundel. This design motif is more than likely a family crest and was imprinted on the cloth to identify it as belonging to a certain family.

The crest is quite large and detailed as can be seen in the accompanying photos here: the crane is an auspicious symbol in Japan and it conveys a wish for long life and it is also a symbol of conjugal fidelity. The crane mates for life.

There is some scuffing to the deep indigo tone and a few mars to the white area of the crane but overall this is in good, used condition. 

The cotton is hand woven and seemingly hand spun and is of a very nice weight.

A strikingly graphic image and a traditional dyeing technique, this is a captivating, well made Japanese folk textile.
