A Large Tsutsugaki Dyed Cotton Futon Cover: Family Crest and Paulownia Flowers
early twentieth century
76" x 49", 193 cm x 124.5 cm
This is a large, indigo dyed cotton tsutsugaki futon cover; it is seemingly unused and is in good, used condition.
The indigo dyed background is a deep, rich, velvety blue color. The spare, hand drawn images sit nicely against it--on top and bottom we see pale blue arabesques that flank a central paulownia bloom, paulownia being a traditional Japanese design motif.
In the center of this arrangement is a stark and large resist dyed family crest, in this case it is the ivy design or tsuta.
When this futon cover was used in the home this four-panel piece would have been framed and backed by cotton and it would have been stuffed with cotton wadding; it would have been a duvet of sorts and would have been used in the same way.
If you are interested in using this piece as a duvet in your own home this could easily be fitted again into such a configuration and enjoyed as intended.
Lovely.
