A Length of Stitched Shibori: Zigzag Triangles
early to mid twentieth century
26" x 12 1/2", 66 cm x 32 cm
This is a length of indigo dyed cotton shibori that was produced in Arimatsu, one of the towns in Aichi prefecture that was a leading producer and innovator in the production of shibori.
The pattern is complex and shows stitched shibori used in very different ways, both as a repeat pattern of interlocking circles as rows of horizontally-oriented lines. The two types of shibori designs are grouped into triangle shapes that form a zigzag down the length of the cloth.
The pattern is dyed onto a length of commercially loomed, fairly lightweight cotton and is in good, used condition.
