A Sakiori Obi: Rag Woven Kimono Sash
mid twentieth century
92" x 5", 233.5 cm x 12.5 cm
This is a nicely colored and woven sakiori obi, or a traditional kimono sash that is woven using shredded cloth as its weft yarn. It is somewhat shorter in length than most sakiori obi of similar style.
The warp yarns on this obi are white in color. The weft yarns--thin, shredded rags--are shades of pinks, reds, oranges and slate grey The white warp yarns mute the color of the weft fill and gives a pale tone to obi.
This hand woven sakiori obi is in very good condition, with no visible holes or stains, and it is a very handsome example of a traditional, sakiori weaving.
An unusually colored, beautifully woven folk textile.
