An Arashi Shibori Yukata: Casual, Unlined Cotton Kimono
early to mid twentieth century
49" x 46", 124.5 cm x 117 cm
Offered here is an indigo dyed cotton yukata or an unlined, casual kimono. This particular one is a man's yukata although any gender can wear it.
The cloth is really beautiful. It is dyed in one of the many variants of arashi shibori, this one shows diagonally-oriented small diamond shapes.
The pattern is small and compressed and from a distance the pattern blurs and the yukata looks more neutral colored and textured than it does shibori dyed.
This garment was undoubtedly made in Arimatsu, the unofficial shibori "capital" of Japan where so much of the shibori that is known to the world, and loved by it, was made.
The yukata is in very good condition, there are no obvious flaws such as tears, stains or abrasion.
It is an extremely handsome and still-very-wearable garment that shows so much integrity of great artisan dyeing, it is a real treasure.
