A Length of Rustic Katazome Dyed Cotton: Large Repeat
early twentieth century
59 1/4" x 12 3/4", 150.5 cm x 32.5 cm
This is a generously sized length of indigo dyed katazome cotton whose repeat pattern is done in large scale.
The design is based on a floral concept that is centered within a network of a riff on shippo tsunagi or interlocking circles.
Background is a dark, dark blue and the designs are highlighted with a faded orange pigment dye: the color has gone somewhat yellow/orange.
The pattern itself is flawed due to the dyeing process; there is charm in this. An example of the smudged pattern can be seen on the second detail photo after the lead photo.
It is a gloriously spirited design and one with a great deal of personality. The flawed resist dyeing adds rustic charm.
This is a delightful, visually appealing length of old katazome cotton.
