A Length of Nineteenth Century Katazome Cloth: Delicate, Antique Design
katamid to late nineteenth century
33" x 13 1/4", 84 cm x 33.5 cm
This is a length of hand spun, hand woven indigo cotton that has been dyed in the katazome method. It seems to have quite good age, probably dating to around the mid 19th century
It shows a crowded design of delicately drawn filigree-like motifs: cherry blossoms and chrysanthemums are formed as roundels while stylized chrysanthemums are strewn about in the background.
There is a good amount of orange-hued pigment dye that creates vibrancy in the design. The material used for this is an iron oxide-derived pigment called bengara in Japan.
The texture of the hand woven cloth is delicious to see and feel; there is a small hole or two, one pictured. The empty band of indigo at the top of the length indicates this piece is the end of the bolt.
A marvelous length of old cloth this is a beautifully realized piece of katazome dyeing from the 19th century.
