A Length of Katazome Dyed Cotton: Chrysanthemums, Pine Needles and Cherry Blossoms
early twentieth century
24" x 12 3/4", 61 cm x 32.5 cm
This good looking length of old, indigo dyed katazome cotton shows a lovely pattern of maple leaves, chrysanthemums, cherry blossoms, folding fans and pine needles, it is a real smattering of so many popular Japanese design motifs.
The indigo tone of the background is rich. The pattern is playful with a sense of lightheartedness or implied motion. The white areas of the pattern are rather bright due to the fact the length was resisted on both its sides.
This is a rich mine of traditional Japanese design motifs, each of which is beautifully placed within an artful scheme.
Beautiful.
