A Patched Sliver of a Sashiko Furoshiki: Visual Contrast
early to mid twentieth century
69 1/2" x 11 1/4", 176.5 cm x 28.5 cm
This is a sliver of a sashiko stitched furoshiki that was taken from a larger piece: as there are no selvedges to this panel it seems it was taken with no great care to preserve the selvedges.
The top and the bottom of the length show sashiko stitching. The top motif is based on Buddhist swastikas and the bottom motif is that of a stylized chrysanthemum. On the bottom of the length you will see a patch of the same sashiko stitched cloth as is shown at the top of the panel.
Patches are clustered in the middle of the length and are also seen above and below it on the panel.
Overall this is a charming length of old sashiko stitched cotton cloth with lots of visual appeal.
