A Tattered Indigo Dyed Cotton Boro Jacket: Beautifully Shaped Mendings
late nineteenth, early twentieth century
38" x 48", 96.5 cm x 122 cm
This is a very nice looking and powerfully subtle indigo dyed cotton boro work coat: by powerfully subtle is meant the repairs to the coat are each of a quirky and artistic type, each of them shown on the detail photos which accompany this post.
The coat itself is made of a beautifully hand loomed indigo dyed nineteenth century cotton cloth. This cloth is now abraded from years and years of work and also probably because it was recycled from another source before it was fashioned to become the jacket we see here.
There is a very good amount of wear and abrasion to this piece. In addition to the repairs which are beautiful and obvious there are holes, surface abrasion , a long tear to the front and nicks to the cloth all over the jacket.
The coat is made from two layers of cloth with a third layer occupying most of the interior as a lining.
But most importantly have a good look at the detail photos here which aim to capture the charm and personality of the stitched repairs, each of which assumes an unusual and delightful shape due to the kind of patching required.
Wonderful.
