A Length of White on Blue Narumi Kongata: Delicate Image
early twentieth century
22" x 13 1/2", 56 cm x 34 cm
This is a length of blue-on-white katazome that shows details dyed in a multi-stenciled effect that is meant to mimic shibori. This type of complex katazome is referred to as Narumi kongata.
The background is linear and wispy in effect and this is punctuated by shaded blue designs that are meant to mimic miura shibori. Interestingly one can easily see the break in the repeat which is not often the case in this kind of complex katazome cloth.
The wispy background shows flowering grasses and folding fans which, as designed, are a nice foil to the tonal, faux shibori elements of the design that are rendered in tones of blue.
The length is in good, used condition.
