A Length of Indigo Dyed Katazome Cloth: Paulownia and Chrysanthemum

$85.00 USD

late nineteenth century
34 1/4", 13 1/4", 87 cm x 34 cm

This is a length of indigo dyed cotton katazome cloth which is made of hand spun, hand woven cotton.

The pattern is intricate and complex. It shows stylized chrysanthemums and pauwlonia blooms evenly interspersed within a network of twined lattice. The aesthetic feeling of this cloth suggests some kind of Victorian-era design: as Japan was an influence on European and art and design at this time this observation might not be far fetched.

The cloth is rich in color and pattern and it is in good, used condition.
