A Faded and Softly Toned Safflower Dyed Han Juban: Hemp or Ramie

This delicately colored and well-faded garment is a han juban or a half under-kimono. It is made of hand plied, hand woven hemp or ramie.

Its pale pink color is the result of being dyed in benibana or safflower which is a traditional Japanese plant dye and one that, when dyed onto cloth, is sensitive to light and water. It is light fugitive and fades easily and readily which is why the color on this garment appears as it does.

The vestigial nature of the pink color seen here is simply beautiful and is very much in keeping with the age and the wear of this kind of dyed cloth.

The subtle changes in tone are soft and produce an artistic effect. As well, as can be seen by the many seams within the han juban, it is hand stitched from recycled pieces of another garment. This kind of delicate geometry of construction within the entire format of the han juban adds visual interest and talks about an unknown, personal history attached to it. As well, you can see expert mending in the form of patches which are shown on the detail photos here. 

This is a wonderful opportunity to acquire a classic type of Japanese naturally dyed cloth that has faded out to a perfect and visually pleasing softness.
