This is a book of wood block printed traditional Japanese and borrowed Chinese designs that was published as a magazine in 1897.

The slim volume is comprised of 10 pages and shows a total of 22 distinct designs and one loose woodblock print that is tucked into to the book.

By and large the patterns shown in the book are elaborately rendered and colored. Most are floral but there are some animal and bird depictions--rabbits and cranes--and several showing the legendary Buddhist phoenix.

Please know that on some of the images you will see some ink from the facing image that has offset onto the opposite one in the book. One or two examples of this have been shown in the detail photos accompanying this post, but do look at each of the images shown here to see more of this offsetting.

Overall the images are delicately colored and beautifully drawn.

This is a wonderful library of images and motifs that has good age and a great deal of beauty.

Lovely.
