An Okinawan Cotton Kimono: Distinctive Kasuri Pattern
mid twentieth century
shoulder to hem x sleeve tip to sleeve tip: 42" x 44", 111.5 cm x 114.25
This beautifully cool greyish toned cotton kimono is woven in the kasuri technique and was made in Okinawa. The shape of the kimono--short in length with the "Ryu so" or short, square sleeves--is distinctively Okinawan in form.
The kasuri pattern, too, is distinctively Okinawan and although it is unclear where in Okinawa this cloth was woven (perhaps Yomitan?) the pattern is elegant, original and inspiring.
This kimono is completely hand stitched and it is in very good condition--and it certainly can be easily worn. It still has a lot of life in it.
A very good looking old garment from a desirable weaving source, this is a recommended piece.
