A Beautifully Embroidered Indian or Pakistani Ralli Bag: PomPoms
$120.00

ca. mid twentieth century
15" x 10 1/2", 38 cm x 26.5 cm

This is a tremendously handsome cotton bag which is sewn from multi-colored pieces of cloth over which is an intricate network of expert, thread-counted stitching.

The bag is accented with "pom poms" of many colors, and, in addition, note loose threads both to the front and the back of the bag.

The colors of the bag are beautifully harmonious and contrasting at the same time: please have a close look at all the detail photos to fully appreciate the kind of serious needlework that covers each centimeter of this ceremonial pouch.

This bag is most likely from the Sindh region, an area that straddles Pakistan and India, and bags of this sort, it is said, were carried by men at their weddings.

As interesting as the surface of the exterior of the bag is the interior, which is also shown in the accompanying photos.

Gorgeous.
