ca. late Nineteenth century
73" x 75", 185 cm x 192.5 cm
Six large panels of hand loomed, indigo dyed cotton are sewn together to creat this expansive piece of cloth. Note the central panel that is adorned by a resist dyed image of a brazier.
This is a wonderful swath of indigo that encompasses an impressively large area. The natural blue color is still bright and dark, the hand of the cloth is wonderful textured in the hand. These six panels could easily be put to use as a throw or a bedcover; indeed, in its lifetime of service, this piece was clearly a futon cover.
For the boro lover, the reverse of the piece shows some dark mendings and patching. Some small and insignificant unravelings of seams and a few small tears. Note the upper right hand corner were the cloth has torn and has been tied together.
