ca. early twentieth century
126 " x 6 3/4", 320 cm x 17 cm
What great, hand spun, hand woven cotton is used to create this heavily woven length of cloth.
This is a beautiful, decorative cloth dyed using the katazome or stencil resist dye technique: by looking at the attached detail photos, you can see that the katazome dyeing is rustic, not refined: in this there is a great deal of charm and beauty.
Most likely this striped cloth would have been used during a matsuri or festival, either as a kind of rope or as a decorative horse lead. It is comprised of two pieces, sewn together, the seam can be viewed on the photos on this posting.
Just lovely--and recommended.
