This sodenashi (vest) is a combination of sakiori (a weft of shredded cloth) and sashiko(stitched) patches and gussets. Must likely this vest would have been worn by lumbermen or workers in the forest. Examples such as this may have been made in Fukui Prefecture (see a similar example: Riches from Rags: Saki-ori & Other Recycling Traditions in Japanese Clothing, page 40).
This is a rustic work garment, whose thick texture would have provided padding for carrying loads and protection against wily underbrush.
A nice example of sakiori clothing.
